About Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) Hiking Trail

Elephant Mountain is located in Taipei’s bustling Xinyi District. It is named because of its elephant-like shape. It is collectively known as the Four Beast Mountains together with the nearby Lion Mountain, Tiger Mountain and Leopard Mountain. The top of the mountain is 183 meters above sea level, the trail is 1,450 meters long.

The Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan) Hiking Trail is one of Taipei’s most popular and accessible hiking routes, offering stunning panoramic views of the city, including a spectacular view of Taipei 101, Taiwan’s iconic skyscraper. Located in the Xiangshan area of Taipei, this short but rewarding hike takes visitors through lush greenery and rocky paths, making it an ideal outdoor activity for both tourists and locals.

The trail is named after the mountain, which resembles an elephant’s trunk and head, a fitting name given its prominent position in the city’s landscape. Despite being located within the urban setting of Taipei, the trail offers a peaceful escape into nature, with scenic viewpoints that provide a breathtaking contrast to the city’s hustle and bustle.

The hike is relatively short, around 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) one way, but it does include some steep sections, making it moderately challenging. However, the well-maintained steps and pathways make it accessible to hikers of all levels. Along the way, there are several rest spots, and the short duration of the hike makes it a great choice for visitors who want a quick outdoor adventure without straying too far from the city.
