How to Rent YouBike in Taiwan Without Local Number

Taipei is one of the most bike-friendly cities in Asia, and the YouBike App is your go-to tool for discovering the island’s best cycling routes. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely ride along the Tamsui River, commuting to the next MRT station, or exploring hidden gems around the city, YouBike is a convenient and eco-friendly way to get around.

Convenience: You don’t need to return the bike to the same station—pick it up at one location, drop it off at another.

Affordable: YouBike is an economical choice for short-distance travel—rent bikes for as little as NT$10 per 30 minutes.

How to Rent YouBike in Taiwan Without Local Number

Foreign tourists can rent a youbike(single rental) and pay with international credit cards.

▎You can rent a youbike with a credit card without signing up as a YouBike member.

▎One-time rentals (by non-members) are not eligible for ride subsidy and public bicycle injury insurance.

▎Use a credit card to authorize a single rental. Each authorization is for 120 hours. Re-authorization is required for any hours exceeding 120 hours.

▎A single rental fee must be withheld: NT$3,000 (deposit payment) for YouBike 2.0/2.0E.

▎If the youbike is rented and returned normally, the system will automatically cancel the authorization after the authorization expires and return the authorized amount. The return time is based on the working days of each credit card bank.

Link Your Credit Card

If you don’t have Taiwan mobile number, please refer to the following process.

Download the official YouBike app (Apple: App Store or Android: Google Play), open the app and click “Scan” at the bottom of the home screen, then select “Single Rental” and follow the steps to link your credit card.

Note: When you register your credit card, a deposit of NT$3,000 will be charged to your credit card, even if you have not used youbike yet. If you haven’t rented a YouBike yet, don’t link your credit card in advance.

Rental process

When finished linking, go back to the home screen of the app and click “Scan” at the bottom. Press the on-board “Rent via QR Code” button(left and orange), point it at the on-board screen and either scan the QR code or enter the verification code for unlocking. The “Pull the bike backwards. Return it later to a 2.0 dock” message appears on the screen. Hold the handlebars with both hands and pull back to get the bike.

Return process

Align your bike’s front wheel with the wheel alignment grooves. Insert the lock into the slot as far as it can go and confirm that the screen reads “Thank You,” indicating you have returned it.

When you return your YouBike, the rental fee will be charged to your credit card. There is a Refund Deposit option within the app. If you forget to click the button, your refund will be automatically issued after 120 days.
