Things to Know Before Start Alishan Itinerary
Generally speaking, one night in Alishan is enough, unless you are a forest lover or like hiking. For day trippers, you can spend 5-6 hours walking along the main road of Alishan on the first day. The next day you can take the park’s train and walk the other trails in 4-10 hours.
Visitor Service Center
The Alishan National Forest Recreation Area Visitor Service Center provides open lockers, which are not responsible for storage (please carry valuables with you). The opening hours are 08:00-17:00. Remember to pick up your luggage during the opening hours.
What to Bring for Hiking in Alishan
Hiking in Alishan is a magical experience with misty forests, ancient trees, and cool mountain air. Here’s a practical checklist of what to bring when hiking in Alishan, especially if you’re planning to explore the Sacred Tree area, Sister Ponds, or catch that famous sunrise.
Luggage Storage at Chiayi Train Station, Chiayi HSR Station or Taipei?
Essentials:
- Comfortable walking shoes or Easy-grip shoes: Trails are well-maintained, but forest paths can get slippery if wet or rains.
- Hiking pants, Thermal long-sleeve shirt and Light waterproof jacket: The weather in the mountains can change quickly, with sunshine quickly turning into fog or drizzle. Even in summer, it’s cool.
- Reusable water bottle:Stay hydrated!There are drinking fountains at the entrance transfer station, the passenger service center, Alishan Station, Zhuoping Station, Alishan Work Station, and all hotels in the area.
- Snacks or energy bars: There are food vendors – Alishan Shopping Street, which includes the 7-Eleven, dining area andmost of the restaurantsr. There were several vendors selling snacks at Alishan Shouzhen Temple. If you’re hungry, this is a good time to refuel.
- EasyCard: Useful for local transport like the Alishan Forest Railway. You can use it to buy items at all the convenience stores.
- Camera or phone with extra battery – trust me, you’ll want to capture everything.
- Small backpack for storing layers and essentials.
Nice to Have:
- Hat and sunglasses (for sunny spells)
- mall towel or wet wipes – trails can get muddy, and restrooms are basic
For Sunrise Visitors (Zhushan Trail):
- Warm layers or fleece – early mornings are cold, even in warmer months

There are two boarding locations: Terminal and the Visitor Center Station. The bus stops in front of Zhuoping Park. Visitors can get off at Zhuoping Station and walk to the Sisters Pond and other attractions.
Xianglin Line (Red Line)
There are two boarding locations: Terminal and the tourist center station. The bus stops next to Shouzhen Temple. Visitors can get off at Xianglin Station and walk to the giant tree trail and other attractions.
Shift time: No fixed shift, flexible arrangement at each station
Departure Interval
Visitor Center Station → Zhuoping Station: The distance is about 2.2 kilometers. The travel time, including the time for tourists to get on and off the bus, is about 10 minutes.
Visitor Center Station → Xianglin Station: The distance is about 1.8 kilometers. The travel time, including the time for tourists to get on and off the bus, is about 8 minutes.
Zhuoping Station → Xianglin Station / Visitor Center Station: The distance is about 1.2 kilometers. The travel time, including the time for tourists to get on and off the bus, is about 6 minutes.
Zhushan Line (Yllow Lne)
There are two boarding locations: Visitor Center Station and Zhuoping Station.
The bus stops at Duegaoyue Station and you get off at Zhushan Station. If you wish to take the return Zhushan Line, please follow the timetable.

Departure Interval
Visitor Center Station → Zhushan Station: The distance is about 5.5 kilometers. The driving time, including the time for tourists to get on and get off the bus, is about 35 minutes.
Zhushan Stargazing Route
The boarding point is the Visitor Center Station (via Zhuoping Station) to Zhushan and back.
The night tour of Zhushan (round-trip tickets only) departs at 19:00 AM (the tour will be cancelled in case of bad weather) and 21:00 returns from Zhushan.
The stargazing activity will decide whether to sell tickets based on the weather conditions on the day. Tickets can be purchased on site after 17:30.

Once you arrive at Alishan Bus Terminal, walk to the entrance and pay the entrance fee. You’ll see a few buildings on your left. This is the Alishan Shopping Street, which includes the 7-Eleven, dining area, most of the restaurants, souvenir shops, and the Alishan Visitor Center.

Standard Discount Ticket: NT$150 (Tourist holds a ticket for taking public transportation bus or shuttle)
Luggage can be stored at accommodation or Visitor Service Center in Alishan, and valuables can be carried with you.

Book the Sunrise Train Tickets in Advance
Train tickets can be booked online or on the second floor of Alishan Train Station between 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm the day before. I recommend buying your train tickets a day in advance as they can get sold out.
As sunrise time varies in different seasons and every day, the schedule of the Zhushan Sunrise Watching Train is adjusted based on the sunrise time and number of passengers each day. In summer, the first train departs at about 4:00 a.m.; and in winter, it will be rescheduled to 6:00 a.m. The actual departure time of the sunrise watching train on the next day will be posted on the website, railway station, entrance of the forest recreational area, and the visitor center around 16:00pm each day. Ticket Vending Machine at the first floor of Alishan station. Passenger buying the ticket of three branch line can use the ticket vending machaine to pay, the machine also supports credit card, stored value card ( Easy card, iPASS card ) or mobile payment ( Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay ). If passenger has paid for tickets online, they can recieved the papar ticket at ticket vending machine by entering preservation code or last 4 number of ID.
12:40 Hike the Trails
Take a leisurely stroll along the forest trail and enjoy the phytoncide.
The forest trail route gives you a perfect blend of nature, iconic sights, and peaceful vibes. This will be a half-day to full-day walking itinerary, depending on your pace and don’t worry, the trails are all well-maintained, safe, and scenic.
Duration: 3 to 5 hours (leisurely pace, with photo & rest stops)
Difficulty: Easy to moderate – wooden paths, stairs, and forest trails
Highlights: Sacred trees, ponds, temples, misty forest vibes

In spring, this path is surrounded by blooming sakura trees.
Even off-season, it’s a scenic walk through alpine gardens.
Sisters Ponds (姊妹潭)
Two peaceful ponds, said to be tied to an indigenous legend of sisterhood and love.
Quiet, reflective spot – great for a short rest.
Xianglin Sacred Tree (香林神木)
A massive red cypress, over 2,300 years old – one of Alishan’s most sacred and photographed trees.
Beautiful even in the fog; great light around sunrise or dusk.
Shouzhen Temple (受鎮宮)
A serene temple nestled in the forest.
You can light incense or just enjoy the peaceful mountain energy.
Giant Tree Trail (巨木群棧道)
The highlight trail! Walk among dozens of massive old cypress trees.
Watch for birds and forest animals — especially in the early morning.
Sacred Tree Station (神木車站)
Sacred Tree Station is small, serene, and surrounded by towering thousand-year-old trees that feel like they’re watching over you.
The entire walk takes about 3 hours. The forest trail takes about 2 hours to walk. If you need to take public transportation on the road, you can take a minibus or Alishan train (Zhaoping Line + Shenmu Line) at your own expense, which can shorten the walking time by about 0.5~1 hour.

Alishan is known as the best place to watch fireflies. Every year in late spring and early summer, thousands of fireflies gather in Alishan. They account for about two-thirds of the total number of fireflies in Taiwan’s low to medium-high altitude areas, with as many as 42 species. Many communities hold night tours and other related tourism activities during the peak firefly viewing season, allowing tourists to enjoy the bright and romantic atmosphere.

Alishan Itinerary: Day 2
03:00 Wake up early to watch the sunrise. In summer, the first train departs at about 4:00 a.m.; and in winter, it will be rescheduled to 6:00 a.m. The actual departure time of the sunrise watching train on the next day will be posted on the website, railway station, entrance of the forest recreational area, and the visitor center around 16:00pm each day.
You will need to wake up about two hours early to catch the sunrise train or hike to the sunrise viewing point. If you have not purchased your train ticket yet, please go to the ticket office in the main building of Alishan Station to purchase one. The one-way ticket price for the Sunrise Train is NT$150.
The Sunrise Train is packed every day and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis. If there are no seats, you may have to stand for 30 minutes. If you need breakfast or snacks, you can buy them at 7-Eleven before heading to the train station. However, many tourists will come to 7-Eleven to buy food at this time, so please allow more time. You might also consider buying a hot cup of coffee, something warm, a heat pack, or a bottle of whiskey.
Zhushan Sunrise Observation Deck
04:00-06:00 If you want to go to Zhushan to watch the sunrise, you can
- Hike along the Zhushan Sunrise Trail to the sunrise viewing point.
- Take the Alishan Train – Zhushan Line train. The train takes about 30 minutes to arrive one way.

05:00 Check-out and go to Zhushan Sunrise Observation Deck. Luggage can be stored at the counter, and valuables can be carried with you. If you don’t have to come back to Alishan Shopping Street for breakfast. You can check out early and then hike in Alishan Forest, which takes about 5-8 hours.
07:00 After Sunrise
What you do after sunrise depends on your plans for later in the day and what time you catch the bus out of Alishan. If you plan to take a bus after noon to Sun Moon Lake or Chiayi, you still have 4-5 hours. If you plan to visit Xiding, Shizhuo or Fenqihu along the way, you can take the bus as early as possible according to your own schedule.
- Hike down along the Zhushan Sunrise Trail to the Alishan Station.
- Take the Zhushan Line train back to Alishan Station.

If you can clearly see the stars at 3 am, it is usually weather suitable for sunrise.
Best Places to Watch The Sunrise
Due to the rotation of the earth, the famous Alishan sunrise can be seen at different locations and times throughout the year. Ogasawara (Xiaoliyuan) Mountain Observatory is the best place to watch the sunrise here. You can also take the Zhuri Sunrise Train from Alishan Railway Station or Zhaoping Station; or climb up the steps along the sunrise viewing trail in Zhaoping Park.
